The goal was to make a trout net that acted like a Swiss army knife, solving all sorts of problems that the modern angler faces while out on the river. Whether you catch a small brook trout or a large rainbow trout the Fat Jake is built to be the perfect size. We handcrafted this model with a teardrop shape so that the end of the hoop is large enough to pull in any catch you have, while the holes of the fish safe rubber net bags are kept small to avoid losing a small catch.
Constructing the Fat Jake with multiple types of wood is essential for a lighter weight that won’t drag you down while infusing enough strength to wrangle the fattest and strongest fish. We offer multiple species resulting in a ton of options for your custom wooden fly fishing nets. Use the builder above to make your own creation! Rubber Catch and release nets are used because they are gentle on the fish’s skin.

We went through 4 or 5 different shapes before we settled on what we find to be a great balance of grip and comfort. We spend a lot of time picking beautifully grained wood from central Pennsylvania. It is important to stay close by so that we can have a hand in not only picking the most beautiful wood, but also in processing it down correctly. Also, staying local is akin to staying eco friendly.
