Seven Tips for the Eco-friendly Fly Fisherman

Fly fishing can have a significant impact on the environment. As an eco-friendly fly fisherman, here are some tips to help minimize your environmental impact.

1. Catch and release: This is a no-brainer for most of us in the community and it is one of the most important things you can do as an eco-friendly fly fisherman. Be prepared with a fish safe rubber or silicone net that will not hurt the fish’s skin. Once you catch a fish, handle it carefully, keep it in the water while you remove the hook and release it as quickly as possible.

2. Use barbless hooks: Barbless hooks are easier to remove from fish and can reduce the chances of injuring the fish.

3. Use non-toxic materials: When selecting your fishing gear, choose products that are made from non-toxic materials that won't harm the environment.

4. Respect the environment: Be respectful of the environment when fishing. Don't litter, and avoid damaging the surrounding vegetation. Bring a small bag, pick up trash if you see it.

5. Avoid fishing in sensitive areas: Avoid fishing in areas that are known to be sensitive, such as spawning grounds, shallow water, and other areas that are important for the health of the ecosystem.

6. Educate yourself: Learn about the local ecosystem and the impact that fishing can have on it. This will help you make informed decisions and minimize your impact on the environment.

7. Use eco-friendly products: When selecting your fishing gear, look for products that are certified as eco-friendly or sustainable. In order to reduce our carbon footprint, we source our lumber locally and we plant a tree for each net sold.
