We’re happy to have had the opportunity to go on a journey like this, meeting and greeting fly fishing enthusiasts like us from all over the globe. As this is the last date, we made sure to do a final seminar for our wooden fly fishing nets and other custom fly fishing gear, and some very awesome and curious convention-goers came by to check it out.

Our live net-building demos were a hit on this stop, with lots of guests observing our process, with the net-tying being a particular hit. The casting demos were also a highlight, with some faces, old and new, taking part on the last date, not to mention the podcasts that were recording on-site.

 In our time speaking with other vendors, there was a theme of wanting to spread knowledge and connect with people. One of the main things we tended to hear was that people wanted to use their businesses to bring a sense of togetherness. Lodges, resorts, instructors, and speakers alike were highlighting the physical and mental, and social benefits of practicing fly-fishing. The traveling aspect became a running theme as well, with the conservation organizations there to inform people how they can take part in making sure the sport is safe for the environment.  The cool, colorful California vibes were also on display with the various vendors of gear and apparel, with tie died caps and shirts. Speaking of color, there we even saw some very cool custom fly-fishing ties being made, with a young attendee helping come up with the color scheme. Lectures, stories, and music from Banjoist Dave Blackburn were abound on this stop to go along with everything else that’s to be expected.

The fly-fishing demos were also included again, with Fly-Fishing royalty like Mac Brown giving lessons to guests and passers-by alike. Another great addition to the tour were presentations from people like Mike, a military veteran helping other veterans find “hope and healing” through fly-fishing. The fly fishing nets, flies, and gear are all great, but it really is the individual people that make all the difference. Their stories, their values, and their strength all on display through their love of the sport.

The Fly Fishing Show 2023 - Denver, Colorado

Welcome to Denver, Colorado. Home of 3 Super Bowl Championships, great craft beer, and some of the most amazing, natural landscapes in the entire United States of American. One look at the gorgeous backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, and you’ll see exactly why people flock to the rivers of Colorado for fly-fishing. This trip to Colorado was an incredible experience, in no small part to the wonderful people who came out to the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center for this stop on our Fly-Fishing Show Tour.

There was more of the same that we’ve come to expect from this tour, and we mean a lot more. The sheer amount of multicolored fly-fishing flies we saw was staggering, and there were, of course, plenty of people there to tell their stories of honing their craft. We spent a little more time speaking to a few professional fly-tiers who were giving demonstrations at the convention, and we got an in-depth testimony of Orvis Fly-Fishing’s Johnathan Antunez, who has been passionate about the art of fly-fishing since his younger years.

““This is my first time tying at this event. I remember my first event in 2017. It was very memorable for me because I had just moved to Colorado, and I was really excited to meet all of these people I had read about in magazines, and I think that’s what The Fly-Fishing Show brings. It brings these people face to face.””

Plenty of taxidermy displays lined the halls, along with some beautiful paintings of fish of all types. Along with the pretty sweet fly-fishing apparel, these artistic displays are my favorite part of this fly-fishing journey across America.

The Fly Fishing Show 2023 - Atlanta, Georgia

This week’s stop on the Fly-Fishing Show 2023 tour is beautiful Atlanta, Georgia!

Hotlanta had more of the great vibe that we were looking for. This fly-fishing show had even more instructors and presentations, where we absorbed even more advice and knowledge on the fly-fishing culture.

Unsurprisingly, there are a number of fantastic, time-tested locations for fly-fishing in the American South, and Georgia happens to have a few notable spots for the sport as well. In particular, the famous Chattahoochee River is a place that people have visited for years to indulge in their fly-fishing passion. We spoke to one attendee who highlighted his connection to spirituality as the driving force to his interest in the sport.

““I came to fly-fishing just because, I mean, it’s such a special sport. It’s a great way to really connect with nature, connect with God. And coming to a convention like this, and talking with like-minded people is a really special thing.””

There were a number of exhibitors who had custom wood fly-fishing nets, even similar to ones we have here at Wayward Trading Post. One thing that always stands out on these stops are the fly displays. There are boxes, crates, tables and desks covered in multicolored flies all lined up and assembled neatly, with certain instructors giving lessons on proper fly-tying techniques. After a lot of observing things ourselves, we really began to understand and appreciate the skill and patience that were being taught in the lessons.

A: Just, you know, to learn some tips from all the presentations they have going on and just find some gear or clothes that you maybe didn’t know about...””

The Fly Fishing Show 2023 - Edison, New Jersey

Another week, another trip for The Fly-Fishing Show. This time, we’re in Edison, New Jersey at the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center, which is a lot closer to home for us. This time, we saw even more engagement from the convention visitors, including a big crowd for the fly-fishing lessons that were happening throughout the day. We saw plenty of people looking to improve their fly-tying technique. At the wayward booth, we were doing our usual custom wooden fly-fishing net making demo, with some enthusiastic onlookers getting involved themselves.

 The booth setup was much denser here at the New Jersey stop on our tour, which meant there was a lot more to look at. In the process of checking out the convention floor, we struck up a nice conversation with a guy over at the booth for Riversmith Inc, which is based in Colorado. Ha gave us a few moments of his time to pick his brain about the convention overall. 

“Q: So, what brings you back to the Fly-Fishing Show?

A: You know, us at Riversmith, we love connecting with the community, we love connecting with the exhibitors, you know. It’s such a great culture that we have, and people are here, sharing our new, innovative products and checking out other peoples’ new, innovative products.”

 I’ll tell you what stood out to me. The displays full of waders and utility vests. There were a few booths that had some pretty sweet-looking gear that I would LOVE to have in my collection. That being said, I have to agree with our guy over at Riversmith. What really brings these conventions together is the excitement of seeing new things. There’s such positive energy from everyone when visiting their booths.

The Fly Fishing Show 2023 - Marlborough, Massachusetts

Here at Wayward Trading Post, we’re always trying to reach into the heart of the culture of fly fishing for our projects. So, when we travel, we make sure to check the local temperature on what it is people love about their work. This year, in Marlborough Massachusetts, we got to speak to and interact with some incredible people from the area as well as other travelers with similar goals. From Abel Reels to Wet Net Outfitters to The Forged Fly, we saw a convention hall full of incredible artists and vendors sharing their love for the sport of Fly Fishing through their products, programs and passion. 

“Q: Why do you love coming to The Fly Fishing Show?

A: Looking at toys, talking to people who do interesting work. Just seeing the diversity of the equipment, [the] people, and opportunities to have more fun doing this.”

Exhibiting and discussing Wayward Trading Posts’s own line of custom fly-fishing nets and fly-fishing accessories was our objective, but we also wanted to make time to explore. Throughout the hall, we found plenty more family-owned and operated business like ourselves with their own lines of custom products and gear.

““Hey, thanks everybody for coming. We had a great show this year at Marlborough, a lot of great lodges and new places, new events, new gear… Amazing turnout, lots of guests. FFI has had great turnouts and great numbers... Thanks everybody for coming. I look forward to seeing you on the rivers next year.””

The first stop on this incredible 2023 tour did not disappoint. Marlborough Massachusetts is just the beginning. The History of Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is a popular angling method that has been practiced for centuries. It involves the use of an artificial fly, cast into the water to imitate the movement of a natural insect, to entice fish to bite. The history of fly fishing can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Romans and the Chinese, who used various forms of fly fishing for both sport and subsistence.

Fly fishing as we know it today, however, can be traced to the eastern counties of England in the late Middle Ages. At this time, it was a sport primarily enjoyed by the nobility, who used long rods, fine lines, and delicate flies to catch trout and salmon in the rivers and streams of the region.

By the 16th century, fly fishing had become a popular pastime in Europe, with anglers perfecting their techniques and experimenting with different styles of flies to imitate different types of insects. The popularity of fly fishing spread to North America in the late 1700s, when English settlers brought the sport with them to the colonies.

In the 19th century, the sport of fly fishing underwent a significant transformation with the invention of new technologies and materials. The introduction of silk and gut lines, as well as bamboo rods, made fly fishing more accessible and affordable, and allowed anglers to cast longer distances and make more delicate presentations. This period also saw the publication of several important books on fly fishing, including "The Fly-Fisher's Entomology" by Alfred Ronalds and "The Book of Trout Fly Fishing" by J.W. Dunne, which helped to popularize the sport and spread its techniques and knowledge to a wider audience.

In the 20th century, the sport of fly fishing continued to evolve, with the introduction of new materials such as graphite rods and synthetic fly-tying materials. Today, fly fishing is a popular pastime around the world, with anglers using a wide range of equipment and techniques to pursue a variety of species in freshwater and saltwater environments.

Despite its long history and widespread popularity, fly fishing remains a sport that requires patience, skill, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Whether fishing for sport or subsistence, fly fishermen and women today continue to carry on the traditions and practices of their ancestors, as they seek to connect with the water, the fish, and the environment in a way that is both challenging and rewarding.

Purpleheart Fly-Fishing Net

Welcome back to the Wayward Woodshop. Today, we’re doing another custom fly-fishing net project for a client, only this time, we’re dealing with a new species of wood! This particular client gave me carte blanche to create a fun aesthetic for his wife’s gift, a handmade fly-fishing net. In the end, we settled on the idea to use an image of his wife and father-in-law fly fishing together.

After we uploaded and resized the photo, I traced the outline of the portrait before going back and adding details around their faces and their gear. Once the client approved the design, I got to work on building the net itself. This very special net was made of Purpleheart with ebony pinstripes and an all-walnut hoop, a fun departure form our usual hickory, cherry and walnut combination. We love to take the opportunity to use new species of wood when we can, and using it for such a special gift was a real treat.

I had this beautiful piece of purpleheart and added a few eighth-inch pieces of ebony to compliment the vertical lines in my portrait. After laminating the net’s handle and bending the hoop, I uploaded the design to the laser and painted the silhouette of the image white to make it pop off the net’s dark, earthy tones. A final coat of sealing oil and this beautiful fly-fishing net is river ready.

Steelhead Fly-Fishing Net

Welcome to the Wayward Woodshop here in beautiful Pennsylvania. Usually, we’re putting out our line of Fat Jake and Big Dipper nets, but this time around, we’re going to take a classic and make it even more special. For this client, we’re making a custom version of one of our wooden fly-fishing nets, complete with an image of a big trout engraved on the side of the net.

This particular Steelhead Trout is just one of the many fish in my line of trout-themed wooden fly-fishing nets. This fishy design was engraved on a Fat Jake Classic, one of our flagship nets here at Wayward Trading Post. As you may know, each one in our classic line of nets has a walnut handle and cherry accents, marrying into a beautiful hickory hoop, complete with a sleek walnut pinstripe. We always source our wood locally and make each and every net by hand.

Once the design is approved by the client and drawn, we upload them into a laser engraver, making sure the size and framing is just right in order to give the custom wooden net a classic, clean look. We always get requests to put animals on our nets, but something about putting a fish on this handmade wooden net just feels right. My personal favorite part is the way the scales of the steelhead trout go all the way down the wooden handle.

Handmade Epoxy Fly Box

Welcome to the Wayward Woodshop. Taking a break from our usual handmade wooden fly-fishing nets, I was commissioned to make a pair of Epoxy Fly Boxes. Now that they’re finished, I’m so stoked on how they came out. A couple Pennsylvania residents who are absolutely obsessed with fly-fishing called us up and asked if we could make a pair of custom fly boxes for the both of them. Of course, we said yes, and got to work immediately.

We began the process by creating a standard Wayward Fly Box. Our classic Fly Box is made of American Red Cedar, which is a nice break from handling all the walnut and cherry of our custom fly-fishing nets. The client and I will go over the desired design before I get started, then I take the image and sketch it out on my iPad. Once the client approves the design, I can upload the final image and put the laser engraver to work, carving out even the most complicated designs.

The next step is to seal the wood with Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy, and I mixed the colors into Total Boat Makerpoxy and begin painting. In this instance, I’m using some gorgeous blue and green tones to illustrate the beautiful outdoor scene that’s been created. Afterwards is the sanding process, which I do by hand. Once sanded, I polish the entire piece with a blend of oils to give it an extra shine.
