The Wayward is a 7'6" split-cane bamboo fly rod built for a 5-weight line and inspired by the Garrison 206 taper. Justin adjusted both the taper and ferrule placement to develop the rod’s deep, progressive action while adding strength where the rod needs it.
The Wayward loads easily at practical fishing distances and gives the angler a strong sense of connection through the cast without feeling slow or cumbersome. The tip has enough touch for accurate presentations and delicate work, while the rod continues to build power through the middle and butt as more line is asked of it.
On the water, it is equally comfortable working close, dropping a dry into a pocket, picking up a short line, or making a quick change of direction. Its deeper action makes mending intuitive, protects lighter tippet, and keeps the rod engaged when a fish turns downstream or digs into current.
Justin paired that traditional action with contemporary hardware and a downlocking reel seat. Instead of a conventional winding check, the rod is finished with his signature cascading thread wrap, a detail developed through years of weaving and handwork.
